Brand - O CD Release Party

On July 30, local artist Brand – O released his debut album, When My Heart Goes Pop. Family and friends gathered at The Warehouse to help him celebrate. Burning Alter, Alive for a Day, and White Flag Surrender also joined in the celebration.

Burning Alter, a Christian rock band from Ellijay, Georgia, got things started. Josh Bearden (guitar and vocals), Lindsey Mayfield (bass), and Nate Stanhope (drums), had a solid rock sound that reminded me of the band Justifide (no longer together). Along with a variety of original sounds, including “Teen Pain,” a song about depression and cutting, Burning Alter performed “Save Me” by Shinedown and “Simple Man” by Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Alive for a Day, a part punk, part metal band performed next. Lead vocals Austin Schrumpf jumped around on stage with a cast on his right leg. For some reason, the current trend in punk bands is to do covers of ridiculous pop songs. I’m glad Alive for a Day announced this would the last time they play “Love Story” by Taylor Swift.

The energetic crowd gathered in toward the stage as Brand – O set up. Then, the stage lights went out and music pumped through the speakers. The electronic music cut into “The Imperial March” from Star Wars, and one of Brand – O’s DJs emerged from the back of the crowd wearing a Darth Vader mask. When he got on the stage, he unzipped his sweatshirt revealing a Brand – O t-shirt. Then Brand – O walked on the stage, wearing glowing glasses and gloves. The crowd screamed! He danced around while performing several songs from his album, including “Radio,” “Breathing Room,” and “I Dunno.” He ended his set with the title track from his album, “When My Heart Goes Pop.” During this song he wore a t-shirt with a glowing heart on it. He jumped into the crowd, and luckily they caught him. I encourage everyone to see Brand – O live because, well, there’s nothing else quite like it!

White Flag Surrender ended the night. This was their second performance as a band. Their first show? July 30, 2010! They opened with a cover of “Extra Terrestrial” by Katy Perry, in which Brand – O joined in. Listening to White Flag Surrender, it is shocking that they haven’t played more—they are full of incredible talent, especial lead guitars Lucas Garner who made his complicated finger picking and solos look effortless. His hands flew up and down his guitar. White Flag Surrender had a progressive rock sound that was a mix of Dream Theater and Tool. I look forward to seeing them again, even if I have to wait till next summer.
